Discover the Historic Charm of Shuri’s Ancient Stone Path
Located just a short walk from the iconic Shuri Castle in Naha, the Kinjo-cho Ishidatami-michi (Stone-paved Path) offers a breathtaking journey back to the Ryukyu Kingdom era. Constructed in the 16th century during the reign of King Sho Shin, this path was originally part of a 9-km military road called “Madama-michi.” Today, a 238-meter section remains, preserved with its original Ryukyuan limestone paving that has weathered 500 years of history.
Recommended Walking Route The best way to experience the area is to start from Shuri Castle Park and walk downhill. The path is steep and can be slippery, so wearing comfortable sneakers is highly recommended. As you descend, you will encounter the Kanagusuku Muraya, a traditional community rest house where you can take a break and soak in the nostalgic atmosphere.
The Sacred Giant Akagi Trees A hidden gem located just off the main path is the site of the Great Akagi Trees of Shuri Kinjo. These six massive trees are estimated to be over 200 years old. One of the trees is considered a powerful “spiritual spot” (power spot). Legend has it that once a year, a deity descends to this tree to grant a single wish.
A Complete Shuri Experience After exploring the stone path, you can head back toward Shuri Castle to see the ongoing restoration of the Main Hall (Seiden), which is expected to be completed by autumn 2026. Don’t miss the “Great Dragon Pillars” (Daryushu), which miraculously survived the tragic fire of 2019 and are currently on special display.
